William Shaw and his younger brother, Jerome Shaw, invested $13 and founded Volt
in 1950 as a technical publications company, eventually providing key contributions
to the Atlas and Mercury space programs. The Shaw's sought a name that would
suggest the image of ''potential'' and ''high energy,'' hence the name ''Volt''. To
indicate leading-edge technology in many disciplines ''Information Sciences'' later
was added to the name.
The company then moved into the employment market to assist with staffing requirements
identified within a growing list of clients. Acquisition of Autologic in 1971 enabled
Volt to aggressively step into the field of telephone directory publishing.

Volt's growth in providing technical services and professionals to telephone companies
provided a strong base upon which to launch the Company's telecommunications services
division in 1976, delivering a full range of engineering, construction and installation
services. Additional growth and acquisitions have expanded
Volt Information Sciences reach throughout the world in areas such as staffing,
consulting and technology.
VoltDelta Business Unit Heritage
In 1980 Volt acquired Delta Resources Inc., a subsidiary of Itel Corp. It formed
Volt Delta Resources Inc., which pioneered computer-generated directory assistance
systems and voice enhancement features. In the same year Maintech was acquired
to deliver hardware maintenance, network operations center services and technology
refresh services to leading organizations around the world.
Components of Nortel’s directory and operator services (DOS) business unit
were acquired by VoltDelta for the Directory Assistance business unit in
2004. Significant voice recognition and directory assistance resources joined the
VoltDelta family as part of this transaction, including an office in Montreal, Canada
with experts in the field of voice recognition.
In 2006 Varetis GmbH was added to the VoltDelta family of organizations with innovative
database and automation solutions for the operator services market. As the
VoltDelta International business unit, this group added presence in Germany,
the U.K and Singapore with Contact Center On Demand (CCOD) and SMS messaging.
VoltDelta initially established DataServ in 2002 as a separate division to target
non-telco enterprise customers for database management and information service solutions. These
Volt capabilities had been well established in the telecommunications market. In
2007 VoltDelta acquired LSSi Corp., a provider of accurate, telephony-sourced national
databases of telephone listing with expertise in managing high-volume daily updates
to very large directory databases. VoltDelta then merged LSSi with DataServ
to create LSSiDATA.
In 2008 VoltDelta created the OnDemand Solutions business unit to leverage
extensive agent enabling and voice recognition technology for enterprises in North
America. VoltDelta OnDemand provides hosted Contact Center on Demand (CCOD)
and voice self-service solutions within a hosted model.
